Dysbacteriosis after antibiotics
In severe bacterial infections, antibiotics simply cannot be dispensed with. But they themselves can strike a blow at the body. Therefore, it is necessary to restore the body after antibiotic therapy.
Dysbacteriosis after antibiotics is a fairly common phenomenon, which can occur in both mild and severe forms. This regularity is explained by the fact that antibacterial drugs destroy not only harmful microorganisms, but also beneficial bacteria.
The basis for the development of this disorder is a change in the qualitative and quantitative composition of the intestinal microflora. Bacteria are useful, conditionally pathogenic and pathogenic. The first two types of microorganisms normally live in the intestines. Conditional pathogens, provided they are moderate in number, do not cause any disturbance.
The immunity is responsible for controlling the growth and reproduction of opportunistic microorganisms, preventing them from becoming activated. If the protective forces are weakened, the body simply can’t keep track of the conditional pathogens, and they begin to multiply actively, causing dysbiosis.
Normal intestinal microflora affects the state of the whole organism as a whole. Beneficial bacteria stimulate the immune system, neutralize foreign microorganisms, remove toxins, and also participate in digestive processes. And this is not a complete list of microflora functions.
The main reason for the formation of dysbiosis is antibiotic therapy, but this is not the only provoking factor. Microflora can be disturbed by improper nutrition and mono-diets, which women simply exhaust themselves in the pursuit of harmony. Intestinal infections, hormonal drugs, abuse of laxatives, enemas, endocrine disorders – all this and much more can cause dysbiosis.
Why does dysbiosis appear after antibiotics?
The likelihood of dysbiosis after antibiotic therapy increases in the following cases:
- long and uncontrolled use;
- low quality pills;
- their improper use;
- ignoring medical recommendations, in particular, taking antibiotics with probiotics;
- unreasonable reception without a doctor’s prescription;
- use during viral diseases.
Characteristic manifestations in adults
For the first and second stages of the pathological process, the appearance of some signs is not characteristic. Symptoms of dysbiosis appear only from the third degree. Consider the characteristic clinical symptoms of dysbiosis:
- persistent diarrhea or constipation;
- painful bloating;
- itching of the anorectal region;
- in rare cases, blood and mucus appear in the feces;
- fever;
- dehydration;
- fetid breath;
- rash on the face and hands;
- nausea and vomiting;
- false urge to defecate;
- belching;
- intestinal cramps;
- allergic reaction;
- body intoxication in the form of headaches, sleep disturbances, fatigue, fever;
- dry skin, brittle nails, hair loss, seizures in the corners of the mouth, stomatitis – all this indicates a lack of nutrients in the body.
How long does dysbiosis last after antibiotic therapy? If the acute onset of the disease is accompanied by severe pain, fever, blood in the stool, then usually this indicates a third or even fourth stage of dysbiosis. In this case, the disease without adequate therapeutic therapy can drag on for a month or more. In rare cases, the first and second stage lasts about two weeks and can end in recovery without treatment.
Important! Self-treatment of dysbiosis can lead to disability or even death.
Separately, it is worth noting some of the consequences that a course of antibiotic therapy can lead to. Stomatitis often appears in patients – this is an infectious and inflammatory disease of the oral cavity, which causes swelling and redness of the oral mucosa, as well as the formation of small wounds. To eliminate inflammation, patients are prescribed antiseptic rinses and probiotics.
During the treatment period, it is extremely important to adhere to dietary nutrition, which includes the rejection of spicy, salty, sweet. According to studies, in fifty percent of cases of intestinal dysbiosis in patients, thrush appears.
In women, it manifests itself in the form of vaginal candidiasis, which is characterized by the appearance of cheesy discharge from the vagina with an unpleasant odor, as well as itching and burning of the genitals. Another complication is a sharp weakening of the immune system. With allergies, the body’s own cells suffer. As a result, the number of colds and acute respiratory viral infections increases sharply.
Dysbiosis in children
The use of antibiotics in the treatment of children is a necessary measure. But resorting to their use should only be after the appointment of a doctor. With dysbiosis from antibiotics in children, there are discomfort in the abdomen, bloating and flatulence. Food is not completely digested, so the remaining pieces begin to rot.
Then they are either rapidly excreted and this manifests itself in the form of diarrhea, or they condense, causing constipation. Any development is dangerous for the baby. In the first case, this threatens with dehydration, and in the second – poisoning of the body, since toxins from the intestines are absorbed into the blood.
Due to the lack of beneficial bacteria that are responsible for the breakdown of food, proteins are absorbed into the bloodstream almost unchanged. This provokes the development of an allergic reaction, since the baby’s body perceives them as a foreign object and begins to actively fight it. Clinically, this may manifest as a rash.
How to restore intestinal microflora? To normalize the qualitative and quantitative composition of bacteria in the intestines, infants should receive breast milk, and older children need to be given dairy products. Probiotics will help restore the population of beneficial bacteria. Mother’s milk helps colonize the intestines with beneficial bacteria.
To strengthen immunity, parents need to provide a favorable home environment. This includes maintaining the temperature and a sufficient level of humidity. The room in which the child is located should be periodically ventilated and wet cleaned. An important role in the healing process is played by the harmonious atmosphere in the house. Therefore, try to protect your child from stressful and conflict situations.
